SUMMARY:[Online] Muralist to Muralist: Stories from the Scaffold
DESCRIPTION:Hear from artists Tania Godoroja Pearse\, Johanna Poethig\, and Kim Martinez from The Great Wall of Los Angeles team as they explore techniques\, the artistic process\, and collaborative approaches to mural making\, furthering the legacy of The Great Wall in conjunction with Painting in the River of Angels: Judy Baca and The Great Wall. \nTania Godoroja Pearse is an art educator and a painter/printmaker living on Mayne Island near Vancouver\, Canada. In addition to her degree from the University Of British Columbia\, she studied at the St. Ives School of Painting in England\, and at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.  As an Artist in Residence and as a teacher she gained experience in mural painting and design but it was  meeting with Judy Baca\, over thirty years ago\, and being introduced to a fully collaborative process which influenced Tania and opened up new directions. Subsequently\, she has worked in association with SPARC. \nJohanna Poethig is a contemporary artist known for her monumentally scaled murals and architecturally integrated public art\, socially engaged collaborations\, painting\, installations and performance. In 2021 she received the California Arts Council Individual Artist Legacy Award. She grew up in the Philippines and has been active in the Filipino-American arts community since the 1980’s.  She is Professor Emeritus of Painting and Public Art at the Visual and Public Art Department\, California State University\, Monterey Bay. \nV. Kim Martinez\, MFA\, Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Utah\, since 2001. Professor Martinez is an enthusiastic educator and is committed to public engagement through the arts. In 2002\, she envisioned a community mural course to provide students real-world experience to create\, propose\, and implement public art in the form of murals throughout the Salt Lake City area. \nDr. Judith F. Baca has created public art for four decades. In 1974\, Baca founded the City of Los Angeles’s first mural program\, which produced over 400 murals\, employed thousands of local participants\, and evolved into an arts organization—the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC). She continues to serve as SPARC’s artistic director while promoting social justice and participatory public arts projects. She is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship\, the United States Artist Rockefeller Fellowship\, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant for the expansion of The Great Wall. \nBaca makes art shaped by an interactive relationship of history\, people\, and place. Her public artworks focus on revealing and reconciling peoples’ struggles for their rights and affirming the community’s connections to place. Together\, she co-creates “sites of public memory.” \nFree\, RSVP required \nOnline via Zoom

SUMMARY:From the Local to the Global: Great Wall and World Wall
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to announce our new gallery-production space at the Bergamot Station Art Center. A significant expansion of SPARC\, this space embodies our commitment to art\, community\, and social change. We eagerly present to you our inaugural exhibition: \nFROM THE LOCAL TO THE GLOBAL: GREAT WALL AND WORLD WALL brings together two monumental mural projects as envisioned by pioneering artist Judy Baca. Conceived in 1974\, the iconic Great Wall of Los Angeles was followed ten years later by the epic World Wall: A Vision of the Future Without Fear. While the ‘Great Wall’ mural program engaged hundreds of local youth and community members\, the international ‘World Wall’ would expand to a global audience\, bringing Baca’s collaborative mural making model to worldwide acclaim. With the support of the Social and Public Art Resource Center\, co-founded by Baca in 1976\, SPARC and Judy Baca would continue to evolve from a modest community based art program\, born out of the barrios of Los Angeles – with its roots in the Mexican Mural movement\, to one of the most influential public art programs in the country and the world. \nRooted in collaborative origins since 1974 and initially conceived as a haven for at-risk youth during summer break\, Baca’s Great Wall of Los Angeles provided a transformative experience along with paid employment to the young Mural Makers; more importantly the opportunity to participate in visually commemorating the unsung stories of their own ethnic communities and their contributions to the development of California. Along with artists and historians\, the Mural Makers gathered each summer from 1976\, 1978\, 1980\, 1981 and 1983\, each year adding 350 feet of mural and a decade of history. Spanning a half-mile of mural and currently undergoing an ambitious mile-long expansion\, the ‘Great Wall’s’ narrative unfolds along the Los Angeles River\, in the Tujunga Flood Control Channel\, in San Gabriel Valley. The Great Wall of Los Angeles has stood as a testament to artistic innovation and social impact\, being officially recognized as a national monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. \nSimultaneously\, since 1986\, the World Wall: A Vision of the Future Without Fear has been a globe-traveling mural installation\, and serves as a space for public dialogue on matters of global importance. Guided by Judy Baca’s collaborative approach\, the World Wall visually examines and sparks conversations on global issues such as war\, peace\, environmental concerns\, interdependence\, cooperation\, and spiritual development. The ongoing evolution of the World Wall is evident in its completed panels\, including Judy Baca’s profound “Triumph of the Hearts” and “Nonviolent Resistance.” Notable panels by the artist team from Finland “Dialogue Alternatives” and the Russian “The End of the 20th Century\,” underscore the mural’s international impact. The project’s expansion encompasses diverse perspectives\, from the Palestinian-Israeli collaboration on “Compromise/Inheritance” to the Mexican panel “Tlazolteotl: The Creative Force of the Unwoven” and the Canadian contribution addressing a ‘culture of extraction’ in “The Inuit Send the World a Canary.” \nThe ‘Great Wall’\, akin to the ‘World Wall’\, persists in its evolution. Despite the ongoing challenges posed by political instability\, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic\, FROM THE LOCAL TO THE GLOBAL: GREAT WALL AND WORLD WALL unfolds the visual narrative of the human spirit to persevere\, drawing cyclical connections between past and present. Both mural projects\, rooted in community engagement and artistic expression\, stand as enduring symbols of transformative storytelling and cultural preservation. \nGALLERY HOURS:\nMonday   closed\nTuesday   closed\nWednesday   1pm – 5pm\nThursday   1pm – 5pm\nFriday   1pm – 5pm\nSaturday   1pm – 5pm\nSunday   closed

SUMMARY:Painting in the River of Angels: Judy Baca and the Great Wall
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in her practice\, Judy Baca transforms a museum into a studio. She and artists from the Social and Public Art Resource Center expand The Great Wall of Los Angeles into the 21st century\, painting two sections of the mural at LACMA. LACMA’s exhibition presents murals from the 1960s depicting the Chicano Movement\, Watts Renaissance\, and archival materials that have never been exhibited\, revealing Baca’s process and innovations to muralism. Baca conceived The Great Wall (1975) as a monument to the people of California\, featuring moments from prehistoric times to the 1950s. She collaborated with 400 youth and community members to design and paint the mural on the walls of the L.A. River to tell history from the perspective of those erased from it. After the artists complete the paintings at LACMA\, they will add them to The Great Wall\, creating a mile of visual history.

SUMMARY:The Great Wall of Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of six blistering summers starting in the late 1970s\, Judith F. Baca recruited a small team of artists and over four hundred at-risk youth to create the most significant public art monument of her native city\, The Great Wall of Los Angeles. Stretching along the walls of the Tujunga Wash\, the landmark mural is a half mile-long celebration of the multi-cultural history of California from the prehistoric era through the 1950s. \nThe Great Wall of Los Angeles exhibition brings the viewer behind the scenes of this iconic work of art through the maquettes\, sketches and coloration studies that demonstrate the mural’s development process. The exhibition unveils the plans for the extension of The Great Wall by an additional half mile to represent seminal events from the 1960s to 2010s made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation received in 2020. \nWith The Great Wall\, Baca furthered her commitment to proclaim equity for all people and to integrate one’s ethics into their creative expression. She educated and directed her teams through research\, sketching and painting the region’s social history from the perspective of women and marginalized communities. \nOften realized in impoverished neighborhoods\, Baca’s projects revitalize the places that host them through the attention and excitement they generate. Her works stem from the awareness that the land has memory and the urge to express the interactive relationship of history\, people and place. Like many of Baca’s celebrated projects\, The Great Wall of Los Angeles highlights the dignity of hidden historical precedents\, restores connections and stimulates new relationships into the future. \nFor over forty years\, Judy Baca has been innovating and spearheading the practice of working with local communities to create countless social justice\, large-scale vibrant works of art. She founded the first City of Los Angeles Mural Program in 1974\, which evolved into a community arts organization known as the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC). Today\, while continuing to serve SPARC as artistic director\, Baca is one of the most celebrated Chicana artists\, a world-renowned muralist\, social activist and UCLA Professor Emeritus. \nBaca’s collaborative\, portable mural World Wall: A Vision of the Future Without Fear was shown in an enveloping installation at MOCA in 2022. Later this year\, Baca’s World Wall will travel to Mexico for an immersive exhibition experience at El Cervantino in Guanajuato\, Latin America’s most prominent cultural festival\, and her retrospective at The Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City. In March 2023\, Baca was awarded the National Medal of Art Recognition by the President of the United States\, Joseph Biden\, for her monumental impact on public art in America and her collaborative work that “has turned forgotten histories into public memory—pioneering an art form that empowers communities to reclaim public space with dignity and pride.”
